Study of Some Major Non-Biodegradable Solid Wastes Along Thane Creek of Mumbai
نویسنده
چکیده
Thane creek is one of the most important ecosystems around Mumbai, and the mangroves surrounding the ecosystem form the vital green lung for the residents. It is also an important feeding and breeding ground for fishes. In recent past man has misused this ecosystem by way of releasing sewage, dumping solid waste, etc. and has succeeded in chocking the ecosystem. The results of present investigation indicates that plastics carry bags, milk/oil bags, plastic bottles and foot wares are some of the major NBDSW materials responsible for solid waste pollution. On the basis of the findings, it is suggested that accumulation of plastics and synthetic rubber can be controlled by recycling and incineration, while accumulation of glass can be controlled only by recycling. The objective of the present work is to throw light on deteriorating condition of Thane creek, suggesting the need to prepare a well-planned waste management system.

Geochemical Assessment of Metal Concentrations in Mangrove Sediments along Mumbai Coast, India
Two short sediment cores collected from mangrove areas of Manori and Thane creeks along Mumbai coast were analysed for sediment composition and metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni, Zn, Cr and V). The statistical analysis of Pearson correlation matrix proved that there is a significant relationship between metal concentration and finer grain size in Manori creek while poor correlation was observed in...

Ulhas river estuary (73°14′E, 19°14′N to 72°54′E, 19°17′N) and Thane creek (72°55′E, 19°N to 73°E, 19°15′N) near Mumbai, India are highly polluted owing to the heavy load of industrial pollutants and sewage discharge. The traditional fisher-folk living along the banks of Ulhas river estuary and Thane Creek rely on these contaminated fish for their daily sustenance, thereby being exposed to heav...
متن کاملDepth Profile of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sediment Core from Thane Creek Area of Mumbai, India
In recent years there has been a growing concern all over the globe, about marine pollution due to persistent organic pollutants. Sediments, which are an important component of marine environment can serve as sorbents or concentrators for various persistent organic pollutants, including Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, the depth profile of accumulated PCBs in Thane Creek sedimen...

Background and purpose: In spite of many studies on composting from municipal solid wastes, rural solid wastes have not been studied. A high percentages of rural solid wastes containing domestic, animal and agricultural solid waste is biodegradable. The objective of this research was to study the chemical and microbial quality of compost produced by mixed rural solid wastes and other composts...
متن کاملA kinetic analysis of solid waste composting at optimal conditions.
This discussion explores the possibility of having a measure of the biodegradable organic carbon content in solid wastes. Currently, indirect measures for determining the concentration of biodegradable organic matter are being used and most of them are based on respiration indices (oxygen consumption or carbon dioxide production) or chemical parameters (volatile solids or total organic carbon)....
